Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
